MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR CHOICE TEXAS PETITION
We call on the Deans of Texas Medical Schools to publicly affirm their commitment to abortion and family planning education.
As medical students and educators, we are deeply concerned about the negative impact abortion restrictions and bans may have on medical education. We are worried that medical students will not graduate with the skills necessary to care for future patients. As we are sure you know, abortion is common, and one in four people who can become pregnant will have an abortion in their lifetimes. Leading organizations in the medical profession, including the AAFP, ACOG, and APGO recommend that medical students receive education in comprehensive reproductive health decision making, which includes abortion care. ACOG specifically recommends that medical students graduate knowing how to support patients in their decision making about pregnancy, including nondirective options counseling with comprehensive information about abortion; this counseling requires a complete understanding of abortion so that providers can educate patients. Moreover, to better serve our communities, students must understand the public health impacts of legal abortion and the importance of access to abortion care.
